Acrylic rigid sheets (also known as Plexiglas, Perspex, or Lucite) are super versatile, and you can use them in a bunch of different settings.
Electrical Switchboard covers, Table Tops, Shelves, Cut out Shapes, Signs, Photo Frames, Partitions or Window glass replacements.
Cast acrylic especially is made to be UV-resistant, meaning it won’t yellow or degrade under sunlight over time. Acrylic is non-porous and doesn’t absorb moisture, so it won’t warp, rot, or mold. It can handle most outdoor temperature swings (-30°C to ~80°C / -22°F to ~176°F) without cracking or becoming brittle.
Polycarbonate (PC) is a high-performance thermoplastic known for being extremely tough and impact-resistant. It’s often used in places where strength, durability, or safety is critical. Brand Names: Lexan, Makrolon, Tuffak etc.
There is no clear winner between Acrylic and Polycarbonate. While acrylic is cheaper, clearer much like glass, more scratch resistant and UV inhibited material, Polycarbonate is Extremely durable, great for glazing, weatherable with extremely high impact resistance and can be fabricated without breakage.
There are many hard wearing plastics such as ABS, HDPE, UHMWPE, NYLON etc.
Depending on the application and the environment, different plastics performs significantly better than the other.
